Many psychoanalytic studies have been done on the Oedipus Rex after Freud proposed the theory of Oedipus complex and stated that the complex is the nuclear complex of the neuroses. By reviewing psychoanalytic articles of Oedipus Rex and Oedipus complex, the author discussed about the subjects concerning Freud’s unconscious motive for developing the
hypothesis, early trauma of Oedipus, homosexual issues of Laius, symbolical meaning of Sphinx, Jocasta and her relationship to Oedipus, and acting out problems of Oedipus. The purpose of this review is to provide the readers with the diverse views on psychoanalytic interpretation of Oedipus Rex, which will hopely help the readers psychoanalytically understand and interpret myths, legends, folk tales, and literatures of Korea.
